While the Western United States receives most of the hype when it comes to the country’s ski resorts, largely due to the high density of large resorts and quality snow in states such as Colorado, Utah, and California, the East Coast also has a number of excellent resorts with great amenities and moderate terrain. And while the East Coast isn’t as well-known for the quality of its snow, many of its resorts provide world-class skiing opportunities.
Vermont’s ski areas regularly rank among the best on the East Coast, largely due to the state’s high-quality snow and enjoyable resorts. Smuggler’s Notch is one of the best resorts in the state, with a family-friendly atmosphere, varied terrain, and consistent, high-quality snow. A locally owned and operated resort, “Smuggs” is easily accessible via well-maintained interstate highways and is conveniently located close to Jeffersonville. Stowe Mountain Resort is only a few miles away, providing an alternative skiing experience for those who enjoy a bit of variety.
Killington Mountain Resort is another of Vermont’s most popular ski fields. A large resort that can accommodate crowds, Killington is popular among those who enjoy daunting steeps and long descents. The mountain boasts a 4,000 foot summit, 1,500 acres of terrain, and consistent snowfall, making it one of the best riders’ resorts on the East Coast.
Mont Tremblant in Quebec is a great option for those looking to hop across the border for a quick international ski trip—or for Canadians who want to enjoy the snow near home. Featuring a European aesthetic, fast lifts, long runs, and a great nightlife, Mont Tremblant has something for everyone in the family, from a variety of terrain to a world-class apres-ski experience. The only downfall is the area’s inconsistent snowfall, which can result in substandard conditions at times.
Cannon Mountain, which is located close to Jacob Boisvert’s home in Nashua, is widely considered New Hampshire’s best ski resort, and for good reason. Possessing forgiving terrain for beginners and legendary backcountry for experts, Cannon Mountain receives a respectable amount of snow each year (160 inches on average), boasts 10 lifts and 95 runs, and is on the Indy Pass, which provides two days each at more than 250 independent ski resorts around the world. Best of all, it’s located less than two hours from Nashua, making it a great option for Mr. Boisvert and other skiers in New Hampshire.
