Security is a fundamental consideration when designing, constructing or upgrading residential and mixed-use buildings. From individual homes and apartment blocks to developments combining residential and commercial spaces, entrance doors play an important role in protecting occupants and controlling access.

PAS 24 security doors provide a recognised level of enhanced protection against opportunistic attempts at forced entry. Choosing a certified doorset can therefore help developers, architects, landlords and property owners create safer and more secure buildings.

What Is PAS 24?

PAS 24 is a UK security standard covering enhanced security performance requirements for doorsets and windows. Rather than assessing appearance or relying on individual security features, PAS 24 considers how a complete doorset performs when subjected to specified methods of attack.

This distinction is important. A door fitted with a strong lock is not automatically a security-rated doorset. The performance of the frame, door leaf, locks, hinges, glazing and associated hardware can all contribute to the overall security of an entrance.

For residential projects, selecting a certified security front door can provide greater confidence that the complete doorset has been designed and tested with resistance to opportunistic intrusion in mind.

Why PAS 24 Matters for Residential Buildings

The front entrance is one of the most important security points in any home. In houses, flats and apartment developments, doors may be exposed to attempts at unauthorised access while also experiencing frequent everyday use.

PAS 24 doorsets are intended to provide enhanced resistance against common methods used by opportunistic intruders. This makes them particularly relevant for new residential developments and refurbishment projects where security needs to be considered from the outset.

Using certified doors can also make specifications clearer. Instead of assessing separate components individually, project teams can select a complete doorset designed to achieve the required security performance.

Security Challenges in Mixed-Use Developments

Mixed-use buildings can present more complicated access requirements. A single development might contain apartments, offices, shops, communal areas, storage rooms and service spaces. Each area can have different patterns of use and levels of risk.

Residential entrances within these developments require particular attention. Residents need convenient access to their homes, but the doors must also create an effective boundary between private accommodation and communal or publicly accessible areas.

PAS 24 doors can form part of a wider security strategy incorporating controlled access, appropriate lighting and carefully planned circulation through the building.

Looking Beyond Security Alone

Security is rarely the only consideration when specifying a residential doorset. Depending on its location, a door may also need to satisfy requirements relating to fire performance, accessibility, thermal efficiency, acoustics and durability.

This makes early specification especially valuable. Project teams can consider the full range of performance requirements rather than treating security as an isolated feature or attempting to add additional protection later.

Creating Safer Residential Environments

PAS 24 security doors provide a recognised approach to improving entrance security in residential and appropriate mixed-use applications. By considering the complete doorset and selecting a solution suited to the building, specifiers can balance protection with practical everyday requirements.

For developers, landlords and building owners, investing in appropriately certified security doors can contribute to a more robust building envelope and provide residents with greater confidence in the security of their homes.
