The Heavy-Lifting Jobs You Shouldn’t Leave Until Moving Day

There are plenty of moving jobs you can bluff your way through at the last minute. A drawer full of takeaway menus and mystery batteries can be tipped into a box. Spare towels can be shoved into a bag. The odd lamp can ride in the car if everything else has gone wrong. Whitegoods, unfortunately, are not nearly as forgiving.

Fridges, washing machines, dryers and freezers need more thought than people often give them, which is why it’s worth learning how to move whitegoods safely before the day arrives. These items are heavy, awkward, expensive to replace and surprisingly easy to damage if they’re rushed out the door with no real plan.

Start Before the Truck Is Waiting

The biggest mistake with whitegoods is treating them like ordinary furniture. A dining chair can be picked up and carried out when it’s time. A fridge needs to be emptied, cleaned, dried, disconnected and usually given time to settle. A washing machine may need hoses removed, water drained and parts secured. A freezer needs defrosting well ahead of time unless you enjoy dealing with puddles during an already stressful day.

None of this is difficult, exactly, but it does take time. That’s the part people forget. Moving day has a way of compressing everything, and suddenly a job that should’ve been done yesterday becomes a slippery, heavy, mildly chaotic problem happening while someone is asking where the tape is.

It helps to make a whitegoods list a few days out. What needs disconnecting? What needs cleaning? What still has food in it? What will be used right up until the last morning? What needs two people, a trolley or professional help? Writing it down may feel excessive, but it saves you from assuming future-you will somehow remember everything under pressure.

Protect the Machine, the House and Yourself

Moving whitegoods badly can damage more than the appliance. Floors get scratched, walls get dented, door frames take a beating, and someone’s back usually ends up paying for a moment of overconfidence. These items are often bulky in exactly the wrong way: too wide for easy turns, too heavy to adjust casually, and too smooth to grip comfortably.

Measure doorways and paths before lifting anything. Clear obstacles. Tape doors shut where appropriate. Keep cords and hoses secured so they don’t drag, catch or trip someone. Use proper moving equipment if the item is heavy enough to justify it, which, frankly, most whitegoods are.

The angle matters too. Some appliances should be kept upright as much as possible, especially fridges and freezers. Tilting or laying them down can create issues if not handled properly, and they may need time before being switched back on. It’s always better to check the manufacturer’s guidance than rely on someone’s vague memory of what their cousin did in 2012.

Don’t Let Whitegoods Become the Final Surprise

The last stage of a move is when patience tends to run out. Everyone is tired, the easy boxes are gone, and suddenly the biggest, heaviest items are still sitting there looking smug. Planning for them early makes the whole move feel less frantic.

Heavy Items Reward Calm Planning

Whitegoods aren’t the most glamorous part of moving house, but handling them properly can save a lot of stress, damage and regret. Give them time, prepare them properly, move them carefully, and they’ll be much more likely to arrive ready for the next chapter rather than becoming the first repair bill in the new place.
