When people hear the word Manchester, usually the first thing that comes to mind is likely the fantastic football clubs we have here, or maybe it’s the band Oasis, or even some of the monumental like the cathedral for example. Well, for a pest control expert in Manchester, it’s a completely different image that comes to mind… It’s the overwhelming Rat infestation that’s silently taking over the city.

The Shocking Truth Behind Manchester’s Rat Problem

Rats. They’re taking over Manchester’s streets, our homes and our commercial premises, and believe me it’s far worse than anyone’s letting on! In the past year alone, pest control callouts have skyrocketed by around 50%, with experts warning us we’re on the brink of a full blown crisis. But what’s really going on beneath the surface of our beloved city?

The first problem experts are noticing is the sheer size of the rats and the vast amounts of droppings they are leaving behind. Pest controllers are reporting rats the size of small cats, and the droppings are double in size to what they used to be.

They are also now confident enough to move around during the broad daylight, when they would normally only come out at the dead of night, when they feel safe.

And if you think that’s concerning, wait until you hear what’s happening underground.

The Hidden Crisis

Manchester’s underground is quite literally swarming with rats. Our Victorian sewer system, once a marvel of engineering, has become a rat playground. These aging tunnels, some dating back to the 1800s, have become so overrun with rats, al the pest controllers in Manchester combined couldn’t deal with it.

“I’ve never seen anything like it in my 20 years of pest control, if this doesn’t get improve soon, I’m leaving the profession altogether.” reveals Graham Bradley, a local pest expert.

A Perfect Storm

The explosion in Manchester’s rat population isn’t a coincidence. Three key factors have created the perfect conditions for this furry invasion:

First, our food waste problem is out of control. Manchester’s booming restaurant scene means more food waste than ever before. Every discarded takeaway box and overflowing bin is essentially a rat’s dream come true.

Second, the constant construction. Manchester’s ambitious development projects are disrupting established rat colonies, forcing them into new territories – often residential areas. Every time we break ground on a new building, we’re essentially playing rodent musical chairs.Third, our aging infrastructure. Those Victorian sewers we mentioned? They’re failing at an alarming rate. Every crack and collapse creates new rat routes into our neighborhoods.

The Supersized Problem

Perhaps most alarming is the size of these rats. Gone are the days of modest-sized rodents. Manchester’s rats are getting bigger, bolder, and more resistant to traditional pest control methods. Some pest controllers report finding specimens measuring up to 40 centimeters in length – not including the tail.

Why should you care? Because this isn’t just about the “ick” factor. Rats carry diseases, damage property, and can cause significant economic harm. They’re not picky about neighborhoods either – from Chorlton to Cheetham Hill, no area is immune.

What’s Being Done?

The council claims they’re tackling the problem, but many experts argue current measures are merely scratching the surface. While official statistics show increased pest control interventions, the rat population continues to grow exponentially.

The Road Ahead

Solving Manchester’s rat crisis requires more than just setting traps. We need:

• A complete overhaul of our waste management systems

• Significant investment in sewer infrastructure

• Stricter regulations on construction site waste

• Community-wide education on pest prevention

The Truth We Can’t Ignore

Here’s the reality: Manchester’s rat problem won’t disappear overnight. But acknowledging the true scale of the crisis is the first step toward solving it. Until then, our city remains locked in an escalating battle with its underground residents

– and right now, the rats are winning.

The next time you’re walking through Manchester’s streets, take a closer look at those shadows. Our city’s rat population isn’t just growing – it’s evolving. And unless we take decisive action soon, we might find ourselves sharing our city with more whiskers than we bargained for.
