It’s without a doubt that parents are the first teachers to their children. Of course, there will come a time when your little one has to start preschool, but they learn the most important things in life from you.  That’s why you should never leave any room for mistakes, especially when teaching the alphabet to preschoolers.

Remember, learning letters is the first step to a better reading and writing experience for your child.  Even though it’s normal for one to panic when teaching the alphabet, you are not the first parent to be in that position. Many parents have gone before you and made plenty of mistakes, so you don’t have to repeat the same.

As long as you learn from your mistakes, your kid will master the alphabet and become the envy of many in school.  Here are some of the common mistakes to avoid when teaching the alphabet to your preschooler.

. Rushing Into It

Many parents become impatient when their children fail to master letters even after trying their level best.  Although it’s normal for these feelings to set in, never allow them to drive your decisions.  Children need ample time to explore with books, pictures, and other tools before they start alphabet lessons.

There’s no need to rush! Doing that only puts too much pressure on your child, which complicates the learning process further. Rather than focusing a lot on teaching a new letter, focus more on the enjoyment process.

. Using Confusing Methods

How you choose to teach the alphabet speaks volumes on whether your child will grasp anything soon or not. You want your little one to master the alphabet within the shortest time possible, but this may forever remain a dream if you use confusing teaching methods.  Things are not any different with parents who teach too much at once as it can be confusing.

Ensure you research more on the best teaching methods when helping your child with the alphabet and handle one at a time. Furthermore, make the learning process as fun as possible for your child to join in the act.  That way, you won’t have to worry about contradicting how your kid’s brain acquires language.

. Overusing Worksheets

There is nothing wrong with using worksheets when teaching the alphabet to your child. After all, they help children learn letters in a fun way. Better, you can use worksheets to help children improve on the letters they may be struggling with since there’s one for every letter.

If your kid struggles with both capital I and the lower case i, then letter i worksheets will come in handy. The same applies to any other letter you want to teach. However, the problem sets in when you start overusing worksheets, as it kills the fun of learning. To prevent this from happening, make it the norm to handle one worksheet at a time until your child masters the letter.

By avoiding these and other mistakes, it won’t take long for your preschooler to get good at the alphabet. That’s the dream of every parent!
