GET Group indirect owner Christian Kmeir is a dedicated philanthropist who recognizes the need to give back to society. Over the years, he has been proud to support numerous worthy causes and projects, including sponsoring a free bus scheme and COVID-19 vaccines, as well as funding the reconstruction of major villages in Lebanon. This article will take a closer look at philanthropy and the benefits for recipients, donors, and society as a whole.

The existence of philanthropy has been a constant in all societies. According to the World Giving Index, Indonesia ranks as the world’s most generous country, followed by Kenya, Singapore, The Gambia, Nigeria, and the United States. Globally, 4.3 billion people donated time or money to help a stranger in 2023.

From one-time donations to payroll giving schemes, philanthropy takes many forms. Widely regarded as society’s risk capital, it is defined as a desire to promote the welfare of others, typically through monetary donations to worthy causes. Communities all over the world face complex problems today, with the most pressing challenges including environmental issues, poverty, and a lack of access to educational resources and healthcare. In developing nations, these needs cannot always be fulfilled by the government, making philanthropy crucial.

Philanthropy accelerates progress where it is needed most. By supporting causes they care about, generous donors can fuel real change in the world, benefiting people, the environment, and the planet as a whole. Philanthropy is a means of imparting lasting social change, with support pledged creating a ripple effect and touching many lives, potentially for generations to come. One of the cornerstones of a stable society, philanthropy encourages people to come together to help others who are less fortunate by donating time or money, helping communities to grow stronger and transforming the fortunes of the less privileged.

Take, for example, Marcus Rashford’s 2020 free school meal campaign. The Premier League footballer lobbied the UK Government tirelessly, calling for free school meals during the school holidays throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as petitioning for a full-scale review of the free school meal system. While monetary donations were critical to the campaign, Marcus Rashford placing his weight behind it increased public perception of the problem exponentially, with his push for lasting change acting as a driving force for success. The UK Government changed its policy on free school meals during lockdown as a direct result of Rashford’s campaign, with his success serving as a testament to the power of philanthropy

Philanthropy takes different forms. Strategic philanthropy involves individuals supporting causes they care about, typically through donations. Impact philanthropy focuses on achieving the greatest impact and benefiting as many people as possible. Family philanthropy helps to establish a culture of giving through the generations, passing on positive attitudes towards money and helping others. Venture philanthropy centers around venture capital principles, applying them to the social economy through hands-on support, board management, and other long-term investment approaches.

Philanthropy transforms lives, in some instances bringing families back from the brink of poverty. It fuels positive societal change, creating opportunities for education, growth, and success. From the philanthropist’s perspective, it has numerous benefits, instilling a sense of meaning and purpose, increasing optimism and happiness, broadening their perspective of the world, and encouraging them to develop a stronger sense of empathy. Year after year, the number of philanthropists worldwide continues to grow. Essentially translating as a love for humankind, philanthropy encourages privileged individuals to respond to local and global challenges, providing them with an opportunity to drive positive change in the world and work towards creating a brighter future for all.
