Connecting with nature can be therapeutic and improve multiple aspects of our lives. Drawing is the most popular and best way to connect with nature, giving us unique perspectives on what we see in the outside world and learn to appreciate it and not take it for granted. We can get a better understanding of nature and find new things when we step out. Here is a quick guide to connect with the outdoors from your River Modern home.

Select your journal

Your journal can be anything- a sketchpad, scrapbook, or a notebook, depending on your preference. You can write about what you saw and did outdoors, draw or make a sketch of what you saw that was interesting to you, or collect the things you find and place them inside your scrapbook.

Slow down

Don’t rush, slow down, and observe your surroundings carefully with no distractions. Put your phone away and unplug so you are more aware of your surroundings, get your senses together, and your creativity running!

Identify your preference

Decide on how you want to journal and document the things you will be seeing. Jot down the things you want to observe and find, and make sure they will align with your interests. Explore the flora, plants, animals, and scenery so that you will be able to stay curious and want to do your journaling activity on a daily basis.

Don’t expect it to be perfect

Don’t feel pressured that your first or every drawing has to be perfect. Take this as a learning opportunity and use it to improve your skills in drawing. Drawing is not meant to be stressful, so just have fun and relax, and let nature inspire you! It’s ok to make mistakes; you can use them as practice so you can see improvements when you start drawing other things you find in the future.
